Monday Morning Madness: Memorial Day 2014

Weekend Recap

The best thing I can say about the Giants series is that the Twins did not lose more games than they played.  If they had done that, I would have been really upset/confused.  The Twins didn't put up much of a fight this weekend, but the Giants are one of the best teams in baseball.  Plus, San Francisco is windy.  Wind is nature's biggest bully.  I'm just glad the Twins escaped with their calculators.

Does Kyle Gibson have the Radke Syndrome?

Everyone remembers the odd affinity that Brad Radke had for giving up first inning runs.  In fact, why weren't Brad Radke brand peanuts more popular?  Because if you got to the game after the first inning, they'd already be shelled.  Radke was an excellent pitcher, despite this odd quirk.  Kyle Gibson is a promising pitcher and I think he's going to be good, but his first inning troubles are starting to become a trend.

Actually, he has troubles in all of the early innings.  Here's an ERA breakdown by inning in 2014:

Now, he also hits a wall around the 7th inning, but that is somewhat common.  More troubling, his first three innings are terrible and the middle innings are great.  Bert Blyleven posited that Gibson is too amped up when starting a game and it leads to the ball being up.  When he fatigues, his pitches drop and he gets more ground balls and more outs.  It makes sense, but then again, Blyleven got to about the 5th inning of Saturday's game before he stopped calling Pablo Sandoval "Sandsobal" so who really knows.

Whatever the issue, Gibson and his coaches need to iron it out because he doesn't have Brad Radke's command and therefore, his ability to overcome a bad first inning.

There should be a term for the last guy who joins the bandwagon.  Mr. Last Jerk or something.  Mrs. Last Jerk if it's a female.  Well, we can work on that nickname later.  If the Sam Deduno bandwagon is rolling along down the street, I'm running my little heart out alongside trying to decide if I should risk my health to jump aboard.

Deduno appears to be a perfectly acceptable back-end starter.  I certainly prefer him to Mike Pelfrey or Kevin Correia.  He looked fine on Saturday, not great, but good enough to keep the Twins in the game.  I still worry about how many walks he issues, but he seems to have the ability to induce double plays because he induces so many ground balls.  As a reliever, his ground ball rate had declined, but since moving back into the rotation, that rate is starting to climb back to elite levels.  Plus, he's generating more strikeouts this season.

I fully believe in jinxes and I fully believe that I am a massive jinx.  If I decide to run alongside the bandwagon for a few more months, there is a completely scientific reason why.

I don't curse a lot.  I am a teacher.  I try to be mindful of the fact that my students may read this if they are extremely bored.  Therefore, I try to keep this part of the web clean.  That said, doggone it to heck, why is Josmil Pinto rotting on the bench?!?

Pinto had one hit last week.  One.  That would be a troubling number if he hadn't gotten only six at-bats and one start.  That one hit was Pinto's seventh home run, good for second on the team with ease.  Kurt Suzuki has continued to be great, but keeping Pinto on the bench 80% of the time in favor of Suzuki is just crazy.  Pinto is too young and too talented.  He should have been alternating starts with Suzuki on the road trip.  I worry that with Oswaldo Arcia and Josh Willingham coming back and Chris Herrmann sent back to AAA, Pinto will continue to sit more than he starts.

If that happens, you can expect the darn cursing to increase.  Beans.

Madness

Former Twin Update - Liam Hendriks

He's back!  Liam Hendriks was added to the Blue Jays' active roster when they outrighted Esmil Rogers (a player I advocated the Twins trading for, thank you very much) to AAA.  Hendriks made his 2014 debut on Friday and threw 5.2 innings, giving up just 3 hits, 3 walks, 1 earned run, all while striking out 3 (well, not while, he just struck out three guys, the other stuff happened around those strikeouts).  I liked Hendriks even though he was never good with the Twins.  It would be cool if he found some success in Toronto.  I just love people.

Random Link - McCovey Chronicles

My beloved Grant Brisbee wrote about the Twins-Giants rivalry that doesn't exist.  He posted this prior to the weekend series and I read it on Friday, but it's still worth reading even though the Twins and Giants likely won't play each other again for a long time.  It's always fun to rehash the A.J. Pierzynski trade, but this time it's from the perspective of the losing fan base.  Here's the link.

Random Top 17 List

Top 17 lists are so popular right now.  Joe Mauer happens to have the 17th worst isolated power among all qualified MLB players.  Isolated power basically measures a hitter's raw power.  Mauer's is currently 0.081, which rates just above "awful" on this chart.  Somehow, Mauer has an above-average OPS+, even with awful power.  I was shocked on Saturday when Mauer hit a double and the graphic stated that he had hit just his 5th double of the season.  I hope Mauer's extra-base power starts to come back because he's basically an average hitter without it.

Here's the top 5 on this top 17 list that I never actually provided (through Saturday's games):
  1. Ben Revere - .034
  2. Derek Jeter - .043
  3. DJ LeMahieu - .047
  4. Martin Prado - .058
  5. Norichika Aoki - .059
#Eddie400 Update

This is by far my most successful half-hearted campaign.  Eduardo Escobar is still on fire.  When I proposed the Eddie 400 back in January, it was more a "why not" idea based on the idea that Pedro Florimon wasn't very good and Escobar was a couple years younger.  Escobar has made me famous beyond my wildest dreams (I have very depressing dreams).  He is still hitting like a champ and still getting regular plate appearances.  In fact, he is currently on pace for about 350 at-bats, but with his recent uptick in playing time, he should plow past the 400 ABs that I requested for him.

I am so great.  I take full credit for all of his successes.

Random Idea to Change Baseball

I love baseball, but I admit that it is not a perfect game.  Thus, from time to time, I have some craaaaaazy ideas to make the game better.  Here's one.  What if one baseball per game was made of like really hard cake.  This would take some engineering, but the weight and feel would have to be the same, so the pitcher doesn't realize the difference.  The ump just has that cake ball in his bag and eventually it comes into the game.  Once the ball is thrown, it would either explode with cake in the catcher's mitt, or better, off the batter's bat.  Cake balls are really big right now, so why not capitalize?

I'm not sure what the outcome would be, maybe it would just be a short comedy interlude, everyone cleans up and we just move on like it didn't happen.  If a player had a flour allergy, it would be particularly compelling every time he came to the plate.  It's just an idea, so obviously it needs some fine tuning.  Just imagine how much old school ball guys would hate that cake ball.

Song of the Week - Pearl Jam - Inside Job

I have nothing to plug this week.  I wrote some stuff last week, but it got proper attention.  Instead, I'll use this space to celebrate!  Pearl Jam, my all-time favorite band, is headlining in Minnesota for the first time since 2003.  Yes, Pearl Jam is still making music.  No, you probably wouldn't like it.  I do like it.  Regardless of how you feel about their music, they put on one of the best live shows I've ever seen.  I highly suggest getting tickets to see them, so long as I have my tickets first.  They love their fans and prove it every night.  Here's a live version of one of my faves:

Parting Thought

I am not an overly patriotic person, or an overly political person or really, an overly emotional person.  I have many family members who have served in the U.S. military and I am fortunate enough to have never lost a loved one during service.  As a social studies teacher, I felt an obligation to remind students why we had this long weekend in late May.  For some, they knew all too well and for others, it gave them something to think about as they enjoyed one of the final weekends before summer.  I don't feel that obligation as a Twins blogger or whatever, but I don't mind taking a few minutes away from the Twins to do as much as I can to reinforce the meaning of this holiday.

To those who are remembering someone important on this very powerful holiday, my thoughts are with you.

Have a great week, everyone!

Monday Morning Madness: May 5, 2014

Weekend Recap

I'll be honest, I only took in the Sunday game.  I had a cold or Ebola or something, so I was sleeping for most of Friday and Saturday.  Sunday's game was great.  Phil Hughes was good.  Brian Dozier was everywhere.  I didn't get to watch any of the Dodgers series either, so it was nice to come back to a win.

The Twins made the right move on Friday, moving Mike Smelfry Pelfrey out of the rotation and Sam Deduno into the rotation.  This is a move I called for earlier that day and I can only imagine that Twins' officials were reading a fake mailbag and decided that was the right place to take advice.  Pelfrey was put on the disabled list with a "groin injury."  We'll address this later.

Deduno has looked like Deduno so far this season.  He's successfully executed his high-wire act.  He has an ERA of 2.89 but a WHIP of 1.55.  His strikeout, walk and hit rates are all up from last season, but his ground ball rate has fallen significantly.  The added strikeouts are likely a product of the move to the bullpen.  I'd guess his K rate will dip and his ground ball rate will rise.  If he can limit walks better, he could have success similar to his success in 2013.

That said, Deduno is not a long-term building block.  He's keeping a rotation spot warm for a better pitcher.  Stop crying, that doesn't mean you can't root for him.  Here are just three facts to remember as you enjoy your Deduno:
  • Sam Deduno is not young.  He'll be 31 in July.  He's older than Mike Pelfrey.
  • Sam Deduno does not throw hard.  He hasn't thrown a fastball higher than 92 this year.
  • Sam Deduno is not "effectively wild."  That does not exist.  Deduno is effective because he induces a lot of ground balls.  He's inconsistent because he's wild.  He's not magic.
Watch Your Head:  Falling Averages Everywhere!

Offenses across the league are starting to heat up, but the Twins are employing the opposite tactic.  Just one Twins' regular is currently hitting above .300 (Kurt Suzuki).  Most of the Twins regulars were hitting above .300 just one week ago.  That said, if you add Pedro Florimon's .113 batting average to any given player, they're all above .300, so that's something!

On the positive, the Twins are still walking at an impressive rate, so their offense hasn't completely cratered.  Entering Sunday's game, the Twins had fallen to 4th in the American League in runs scored.  Unfortunately, they were still tied for third in runs allowed, so the dip in offense has really hurt.  Not surprisingly, the Twins lost 4 of 6 this week.

I still hold out a crazy sense of hope that the rotation will get it together (this weekend was pretty nice), so the offense can fall a bit and the team should still be able to win about as often as they lose.  Plus, I still think the Twins' hitters are accomplished enough to carry the team for games at a time.  Of course, if my hope is misguided, then we're all in for a long summer.

No analysis here, I want wish Aaron Hicks a speedy recovery.  Concussions are obviously scary, so I hope Hicks takes his time and comes back when he's fully ready.  Don't mess with your brain, it's not worth it.

Madness

Former Twin Update - Drew Butera

I'm pretty sure the Dodgers were trolling the Twins last week.  They started Drew Butera not once, but twice, in the three-game series.  He finished the series with nine plate appearances.  Say you polled Twins fans prior to the series with the following question:  How many times will Drew Butera reach base given nine plate appearances in this upcoming series?  I would guess that 99% of fans would answer with 0 or fewer, defying math.

Instead, Butera reached base three times, scored twice, singled, walked and actually hit a home run, his first career home run (just kidding, he has 6).  Years of derision from Twins fans and Butera had simply had enough.  Butera mad, Butera smash.

Mike Pelfrey-related Questions from Readers

Q1 - Mike Pelfrey is on his way out of the rotation, or already out. Is the bullpen his next stop? If so, who gets sent down?
One more! Pelfrey unfortunately may have an effect on this as well. Does Matt Guerrier make his way into the Twins bullpen anytime soon?

Thank you,
Jarren Duffy

Q2 - Was Mike Pelfrey put on the DL with a groin injury or a "Groin Injury (wink wink)?" Is there any oversight from the MLB to make sure that injuries are legitimate when a player is put on the DL so it isn't just used as a place to stash an underperforming player?

Thanks!
Erik Williams, Puckett's Pond

I received two questions this weekend and both were Mike Pelfrey-related!  I'm going to try to answer everything all at once.  Pelfrey has never been a good pitcher.  However, he's never been this bad either.  I would guess he does have some sort of nagging injury and hopefully this DL stint will take care of it.  The fact remains that Pelfrey is under contract for the rest of this season and next season as well.  Therefore, the Twins will give him at least one more chance.

I wonder if the bullpen is a better place for him.  He does throw relatively hard, so maybe he could amp things up even more if he only needs to go an inning or two.  Who knows?  I don't think Matt Guerrier makes it back to Minnesota.  He's behind too many players, in my opinion.  Although, the Twins do like to get the band back together...

As for stashing crappy players on the DL, I'm sure it is against the rules, but it would be very hard to prove.  Unless they really want to get elbow-deep into Pelfrey's groin, I would guess MLB takes the team doctors at their word.

Random Top Six - UZR

UZR is an advanced defensive metric that I'm sure a bunch of people hate.  I think that the metric works pretty well, but I can't explain it without adding about 1000 words to this post.  Here's a link to FanGraphs, where you can learn more about how UZR is calculated and what goes into measuring it.  Here are the top six players in the Majors by UZR, through Saturday:
  1. Jason Heyward - 8.3
  2. Mike Trout - 6.8
  3. Alex Gordon - 5.8
  4. Abraham Almonte - 4.7
  5. Zack Cozart - 4.0
  6. Brian Dozier - 3.7
Why top six?  Who cares after the Twins player, right?  Brian Dozier is a transcendent player and person.  I'm in love.

Half-Hearted Rant - Danny Santana

Why is Danny Santana just rotting on the Twins' bench?  With Aaron Hicks and Mike Pelfrey on the DL, the Twins needed a pitcher and a batter.  Logan Darnell took Sam Deduno's spot in the rotation and Santana has apparently been summoned to eat sunflower seeds.  This is a young kid who needs playing time.  If Ron Gardenhire, often referred to as "Gardy," can't figure this out, then someone needs to step in and figure it out for him!

I understand that the Twins didn't have any other options to add to the roster.  Oswaldo Arcia isn't ready to come off his rehab assignment.  Eduardo Nunez is hurt.  Kennys Vargas, Jorge Polanco and Max Kepler aren't ready for the Majors.  Fine.  Here's an idea though:  let Santana play!  Could he possibly hit worse than Pedro Florimon?  Are we worried he might break one of Florimon's bats?  Florimon barely uses them anyway.  If he went up to the plate with two drumsticks tied together, he'd be just as likely to get a hit.

Get this guy off the pine, Gardy!

KWL Chart - Sam Fuld

Shameless Self-Promotion

I wrote some stuff last week.  On Friday, I answered some of my own questions.  I addressed the Mike Pelfrey situation and the Twins responded just a few hours later.  What other changes are we in store for?  Why not just read the mailbag and find out!  In addition, make sure to check out the blog on Wednesday.  I'm dabbling in writing tests.  This test determines how tortured you are as a Minnesota sports fan.  That sounds fun, doesn't it?  Find out Wednesday!

Monday Morning Madness: July 29, 2013

So, are the Twins not terrible or is this just another mirage?  I've got to say, I've been going back and forth between "this team sucks" and "this team doesn't really suck" far too many times.  I'm growing tired of it.  It would be nice to just know, you know?  Every time I see a lineup posted, I giggle and then make a sad, pathetic joke about Rochester.  The starting pitching is underwhelming.  However, the Twins have exited the All-Star break with more wins than losses.  It is all very confusing.  It's a sort of baseball vertigo and it nabbed Ron Gardenhire who was a "DNP-tummy" earlier this week.  Whatever.  They aren't great, but they don't suck.  Fine.  I guess I don't really need to know any more than that.

Mauer's Twins

I've read a few anti-Joe Mauer sentiments related to his TOTAL ABANDONMENT of the Twins for the past few days.  I read these on Facebok/Twitter, so that's my fault.  I use those capital letters for effect.  I don't feel that way at all.  In fact, I applaud him for taking a few extra days to spend with his new daughters.  Not to get all "big wiener" on everyone, but my daughter was born about a month ago.  I took two weeks of leave and I wish I was still on leave right now.  I could have taken unpaid leave, but it wasn't in the cards.  Mauer can, so good for him.

I know that many people would love to spend extra time with their children.  Mauer isn't special just because he hits a lot of doubles to left-center and has great sideburns, but I do think that if he wants to take a couple extra days and forfeit some cash then that's fine and dandy.  His salary is moot, as far as I am concerned.  Money isn't a substitute for family, special moments and life.  Baseball and work certainly aren't either.  I actually like him more as a result of that decision; he's not a baseball robot.

Sano's pimpin'

This Miguel Sano saga is getting out of control.  He showed up a pitcher/ex-teammate, allegedly disrespected his manager and general manager and was basically suspended for four games as a result.  If he was disrespectful and needs to apologize his way back into the lineup, then that's fine with me.  If he's sitting for the bat flip/slow home run trot, then he needs to be back on the field ASAP.  Those are all internal issues, and I won't get too wrapped up in them.

The fans, on the other hand, have got to chill out a bit.  Both sides of the fence too.  Sano telling off his bosses and pimpin' a home run doesn't mean that he is a locker room-cancer who absolutely needs to be traded.  The Twins disciplining a young player for showing poor professionalism and letting his emotions get the best of him is not a big deal.  It's not a Twins Way or the Highway situation.  He deserved a suspension, if he did everything that is reported.

The Twins retain control of Sano for at least 8 more years, assuming a 2014 debut.  That means they have 8 years and until Sano is 28 years old to mend any fences that were broken during this 4-day odyssey.  Everything is going to be fine.

Deduno's dealin'

Apparently Sam Deduno is good.  I'll probably be the last person to ever come around to his side, but I'm getting a lot closer with every start.  As I mentioned in a thread on Twins Daily, all of his pitches break downward.  That kind of downward break is going to continually lead to ground balls.  If he doesn't hang pitches, he's going to continue to be effective.  Although, his walks are creeping up a bit and that is a concern.

So, I'd trade him this week.  If anyone offered much of anything, I'd take it.  I don't think Deduno can keep this up, I don't think he is part of the future and I don't think we should assume that this two month stretch is more important than last years' two month stretch.  If another team wants to give the Twins a decent prospect for a 30-year-old journeyman with two months worth of good starts, then cool, fine with me.

Then again, here's a list of all the players who I would trade, if the right deal came along:

I went a little heavy on actual Twins stuff, so here's some truncated Madness:

Random Link - Ceremonial First Pitches

If you read me (and if you do, I'm sorry), you know of my internet crush on Grant Brisbee.  He's funny.  A little over a week ago, he posted this piece about ceremonial first pitches.  It's mostly just pictures, but make sure to read the text as well.  The picture of Bud Selig will both haunt my dreams and always make me laugh.  Double bonus!

Thought from Liz - Orange Safety Base?

If you didn't see the Tim Hudson injury, save yourself some queasiness and just take my word that it was nasty.  My wife has often wondered why baseball doesn't use the orange safety base that we all use in slow-pitch softball.  I've never really had a good answer for her.  It's just not macho, I guess.  The baseline and umpiring probably play a role too.  However, after seeing an injury like Hudson's it's a little hard not to overreact.  I wouldn't be against a second first base for close plays like those.  Fewer injuries might be worth figuring out the logistics and rules of it all.  Also, it doesn't have to be orange.  We could have it be sponsored too.  "The Safety Base, sponsored by Geico."  Pete knows that Geico doesn't advertise enough.

KWL - Drew Butera

Remember K = what I know, W = what I want to know, L = what I've learned.  These are great learning tools too, if you have kids.  They can be used for more than blogging.

Link to Something I wrote - Alf

So.  I can't really decide if this is funny satire or just stupid as it looks on the surface.  Regardless, I spent a solid 20 minutes putting different Alf heads on different Dodger baseball cards from the past.  I even made sure that he was playing the proper position.  If nothing else, the cards are somewhat comical.  So, here's the link and I hope you have the same exact sense of humor as I do.  If so, you'll love it.  If not, you'll be so perplexed that your head will explode.  Warning.

Parting Thought

The Trade Deadline is this week and that is both happy and sad.  If the Twins trade away any of my favorite players, I will be sad.  However, within a week, I will have long forgotten about those players because I am TWINS FOR LIFE!!!!!!!!!!!  So, I will be happy with the new players we receive and immediately buy their action figures.  I hope the Twins are active this week.  This team is getting better, but still needs a lot of work.  If guys like Justin Morneau, Ryan Doumit and Mike Pelfrey can be transformed into younger, more exciting players, I hope the Twins pull the trigger.  In summary, trades are fun.

Have a nice week, everyone!
